Building Today: Helping People Express Themselves Better Than Existing Social Systems

One of the features we are building today at TXTWRK is designed around mental health, expression, and giving people more control over how long a post should represent them.

Most social systems let people post how they feel.

But they rarely ask:

How long should this feeling stay attached to you?

That matters.

People need space to express anger, sadness, grief, pressure, fear, confusion, concern, hope, recovery, and change — without every post feeling like a permanent label.

TXTWRK already has Post Tone options such as:

• Happy
• Sad
• Angry
• Emotional
• Concerned
• Excited
• Informative

Now we are working on extending this.

When a user selects a Post Tone, a second dropdown can appear:

How long should this post represent you?

Options:

• Temporary
• Until Date
• See If It Lasts
• Here Forever

If Until Date is selected, a calendar picker appears so the user can choose exactly when the post should expire.

Why This Supports Mental Health

Sometimes people do not need silence.

They need safer expression.

Someone may need to rant, explain, process, warn, grieve, reflect, or speak honestly — but they may not want that post to define them forever.

This gives the user and the audience more context.

It says:

> This is how I feel right now.
>
> This is how long I want this post to represent me.

10 Examples

1. Bad Day At Work
Tone: Angry
Presence: Temporary

> "My manager has really annoyed me today."

2. Relationship Breakup
Tone: Emotional
Presence: Until Date

> "I'm struggling after my relationship ended."

3. Family Grief
Tone: Sad
Presence: See If It Lasts

> "I'm trying to process losing someone important."

4. Personal Recovery
Tone: Emotional
Presence: Here Forever

> "This was the moment I decided to change my life."

5. Derby Community Concerns
Tone: Concerned
Presence: Temporary

> "The city centre feels neglected right now."

6. Local Pulse Feelings
Tone: Sad
Presence: Until Date

> "This month I feel disconnected from my community."

7. Government Policy
Tone: Concerned
Presence: Temporary

> "I strongly disagree with this policy."

8. Elections & Political Figures
Tone: Informative
Presence: See If It Lasts

> "This is my view on the current election."

9. World Events
Tone: Emotional
Presence: Until Date

> "This situation makes me angry and upset."

10. Extreme Emotional Moments
Tone: Angry
Presence: Temporary

> "I'm furious right now."

The Bigger Point

A post can be:

• A moment
• A season
• A chapter
• A lifetime record

Existing systems often treat them all the same.

TXTWRK is building toward something more human.

A system where people can express themselves honestly, but with better context, better control, and less pressure for one emotional moment to become their permanent public identity.

Later on, you can filter through them easier and choose what stays or what does not. Maybe you want to keep the post alive...

After years of testing TXTWRK across mental health, expression, community behaviour and network usage, one thing has become clear: people do not only want tools to post — they want tools to be understood.

People cross emotional lines online because they want others to know how they feel. Not always to create aggression. Not always to start another wave of hatred. Not always to chase sympathy. Often, it is because they are looking for justice, correction, recognition and order.

That is not only the story of our founder. That is the story of many people.

Most people are taught to keep their problems quiet. They are told to stay silent, calm down, move on, or keep it private. But online culture has shown for years that people still find ways to express what they are carrying.

Our founder saw friends do this openly on Facebook years ago — posting anger, pain, confusion, pressure and unresolved problems in ways that made people react, question, worry or feel uncomfortable.

That culture did not start with TXTWRK. It did not even start with Facebook. It was already visible across MySpace, Bebo and earlier social spaces. People have always used networks to say what real life would not let them say.

At TXTWRK, we are learning from that reality.

The goal is not to promote hatred, aggression or emotional chaos. The goal is to understand why people express in these ways, and to build better systems around it — systems that help people record what they feel, explain what happened, seek correction, create order, and be heard without everything turning into conflict.

Expression is not always disorder. Sometimes it is the first signal that something needs to be fixed.

This is also why, this week, TXTWRK is finalising the bad language protocol by default across Posts and Info Reels.

This is not separate from the wider point about expression. It is part of the same lesson.

If people are going to use networks to express anger, pressure, confusion, pain, injustice or difficult life experiences, then the platform also needs a proper way to handle how that expression is presented to everyone else.

TXTWRK already has flagging software built into the platform, but not every part of it is fully connected into the public surfaces yet. We also already have the cover system ready to be applied again. We used this type of system before, then removed it during earlier development and testing, but it now makes sense to bring it back in a more complete way.

The cover system means certain Posts or Info Reels can be protected by default when strong language, sensitive wording or difficult expression is detected. Instead of pushing everything directly into public view, the content can sit behind a cover that people choose to open.

That gives the network a better balance.

People can still express what they feel.
People can still explain what happened.
People can still seek justice, correction and order.
But other people do not have to be exposed immediately to harsh language, aggression or intense expression without warning.

This is important because Posts and Info Reels are fast-moving spaces. They can be viewed casually, discovered quickly and reached by many different types of people. Some people may want to understand the full message. Others may only want a cleaner, safer browsing experience.

The bad language protocol helps serve both sides.

It does not mean TXTWRK is removing the reality of people’s lives. It means we are adding structure around how that reality appears across the network.

There is a difference between silencing people and presenting sensitive expression responsibly.

TXTWRK is building toward a network where expression, correction, justice and order can exist together. That means stronger public safety, better content handling and more intelligent ways to deal with anger, language, emotion and pressure.

We have already covered parts of this in earlier updates, but this note brings the direction together.

People need places to express.
Communities need spaces that feel safe.
Networks need systems that understand both.

That is the next step for TXTWRK.

@BBC we're ready to put closure on the 'Social Media Ban' and ensure our @UKGovernment implement better practices, as even the BBC Reporter had to ask 'What are social media companies actually doing to solve the problem?' with very little response (A classical BBC story).

Problems > Solutions:
•Transparency of algorithms
•Better education from parents/networks/govs
•New AI safeguards in the post box to analyse
•Allow users to add basic level covers
•Choose where your post surfaces

We've actually combat all of these issues, where we are in the process of implementing these practices, from developing an AI analyser, right up to outlining our algorithms in the coming days.

Play a role in helping shape the way we network via @TXTWRK!Checklists: Dev: Business! by applying & sharing your comments.

People want to use these tools to help them in life and work, therefore we shouldn't be restricting or depressing people about social media, when the very same parents and more people are becoming to rely on the usage of social media. People want to discover what is happening locally, that's what social media does today! New rules must be laid for governments, politicians and media organisations on social media.

TXTWRK | SAFETY SYSTEM — NOW LIVE (PHASE 1)

We’ve just brought the TXTWRK Safety system online.

This is not a surface-level feature.
It’s now wired directly into our homepage feeds and search system.

---

🔹 What’s Live Right Now

Safety is now partially enabled across:
•homepage feeds
•search results
•category filtering
•location-based feeds

This means:
•users can control visibility user-to-user
•“take a break” states actively remove content
•unwanted content can be filtered at source
•results are shaped before they reach the screen

---

🔹 Built Into the System — Not Added On

This isn’t moderation layered after the fact.

It operates:
•at query level (SQL filtering)
•with structured rules per user
•and efficient post-processing where needed

So instead of reacting to content…

> we control how it’s delivered in the first place.

---

🔹 The “Couple Hundred” Capability

Each user now operates within a system capable of handling hundreds of visibility conditions, including:
•visibility levels (0–9)
•timed breaks
•phrase-based filtering
•contextual feed rules

This is structured, expandable, and already designed to scale.

---

🔹 Where This Goes Next (This Weekend)

What’s live now is Phase 1.

Over the weekend, we’re extending this across:
•all remaining feed types
•deeper search layers
•smarter visibility scaling (not just hide/show)
•refined filtering behaviour per level

This is where Safety becomes fully system-wide.

---

🔹 Not Black-Box AI

TXTWRK doesn’t hide its logic behind vague “AI decisions”.

This system is:
•understandable
•structured
•adaptable

You can see how it works.
You can shape how it evolves.

---

🔹 How We Differ

Most platforms:
•decide visibility centrally
•optimise for engagement
•don’t expose control

TXTWRK:
•gives users direct influence
•keeps logic transparent
•builds systems that can evolve long-term

---

🔹 The Direction

This is more than safety.

It’s the foundation of a system where:

> users control how information reaches them — not the other way around.

---

TXTWRK
Systems you can understand. Logic you can shape. Built to last.
