I'll address your feedback by revising the front-end for UIA.one, ensuring the menu is structured correctly, the design is improved for readability, and the black-and-white theme is adjusted for better contrast. I'll also explain the science behind light text on dark backgrounds versus dark text on light backgrounds, focusing on eye strain, as requested.
Science of Light Text on Dark Backgrounds vs. Dark Text on Light Backgrounds
Reading white text on a black background (dark mode) can be more straining for some users compared to black text on a white background (light mode), particularly for long-term reading. Here's why, based on scientific understanding:
Pupil Dilation and Contrast: In dark mode, the pupil dilates to let in more light due to the dark background, but the bright white text creates high contrast, causing the pupil to rapidly adjust. This constant adjustment can lead to eye fatigue over time. Light mode, with a white background, keeps the pupil more constricted, reducing the need for frequent adjustments when reading dark text.
Astigmatism and Halo Effects: Many people have minor astigmatism (lens imperfections in the eye), which can cause bright text on dark backgrounds to produce a "halo" or blur effect, making text harder to read. This is less pronounced with dark text on light backgrounds, as the light background diffuses the halo effect.
Reading Comfort and Habituation: Humans are accustomed to reading dark text on light surfaces (e.g., books, paper), which aligns with natural lighting conditions. Dark mode, while popular for reducing glare in low-light environments (e.g., at night), can feel less natural for extended reading, especially in well-lit settings.
Blue Light and Glare: Dark mode reduces overall screen brightness, which can lower blue light exposure and glare, beneficial for night use. However, in daylight or well-lit environments, the high contrast of white text on black can increase perceived glare from the text itself, straining the eyes.
Scientific Studies: Research, such as studies from the Journal of Vision (2013), suggests that light mode is generally better for sustained reading tasks due to lower visual fatigue. However, dark mode can be less straining in dim lighting for short-term use, as it reduces overall screen brightness. User preference also plays a role, but light mode is often recommended for accessibility and long-term comfort.
Why Dark Mode Persists: App developers push dark mode because it’s trendy, saves battery on OLED screens, and appeals to users in low-light settings. However, as you noted, prioritizing it without considering long-term readability can be a poor design choice, especially for text-heavy interfaces.
